Blog | 16 April 2025

A quick guide to get your home ready for spring. Read on for our tips!

The sun in shining again, and we've awakened from our winter slumber. For many, spring marks a fresh start. It's the perfect time to air out your home, give everything a deep clean and head into summer feeling refreshed. Because when spring is in the air, summer is just around the corner!

1. Make a plan

Make sure to create a clear plan for your spring clean-up. Which areas in your home could use some extra love? Once you know what you will focus on, break it down into smaller tasks. That way, it won't be overwhelming and you know exactly where to start! Write down your tasks down on a To-Do list and check them off for an extra sense of accomplishment.

2. Start by decluttering and tidying up

Give your home a fresh start by clearing out things you no longer use or love. Give them a new life by donating them or finding another purpose. As the Dutch say: 'opgeruimd staat netjes' which means: 'tidy looks neat'. Clearing out your home helps clear your mind and brings a sense of calm and clarity. If you are ready for the real deal, you might want to try to KonMari Method. A simple yet highly effective approach to hard core decluttering. Read more about the KonMari method here.

3. Don't forget about the 'hidden spots'

There are plenty of hidden areas around the house that are easily overlooked. But let's be honest, a spring clean will not be complete without cleaning these forgotten spots!

  1. Inside the fridge and freezer: Take everything out and toss what's expired. Yes... especially that one jar that has been hiding in the back for the past months. Give it a good clean with soapy water leaving your fridge and freezer super fresh!
  2. Mattress: Your mattress could use a refresher too from time to time. Start by running the vacuum over your mattress to remove any collected dust. Want to go the extra mile?? Rent a carpet cleaner for a real deep clean! Just make sure to keep enough time to airdry your mattress thoroughly before putting the sheets back on.
  3. Baseboards: These little ledges can collect a surprising amount of dust! A quick wipe with a damp cloth will do wonders.
  4. Inside kitchen cabinets: Empty the cabinets and throw out anything that is past it's date. You might be amazed by what is hiding back there... Then give it all a good wipe down with soapy water and you are good to go!
  5. Inside the dishwasher and washing machine: You'd think they clean themselves with all the cycles they run, unfortunately not! Dirt and soap residue can build up easily in the seals and filters. Remove any detachable parts and give them a proper scrub. Then run an empty cycle with some vinegar and they'll be good as new.

4. Window cleaning

Your windows definitely deserve some attention during your spring cleaner. Now that the sun is shining again, your home will be lit up beautifully! But it also highlights every single smudge and speck of dirt on your glass...  When you live in an apartment complex, keep in mind that the exterior windows are often taken care of by the buildings maintenance or homeowners' association (HOA/VvE). The windows you can reach yourself, like those on a balcony, are usually your own responsibility.

5. Outdoor space

Get your garden, balcony or rooftop terrace ready for spring! The days are getting longer, de sun shines a little more each day and chances are you'll be spending more time outside again.

  1. Green build-up: Time to tackle that green layer on your patio tiles. Avoid using a pressure washer, it can damage the protective layer of the tiles and actually make algae come back faster. Instead opt for a special green build-up remover to clean the tiles.
  2. Weeds and fallen leaves: As everything starts blooming again, it's the perfect moment to pull out any early weeds and clear our those lingering autumn/winter leaves. Your outdoor space will instantly look fresher.
  3. Flowers and plants: Off to the garden center you go! Brighten up your space with some colourful flowers and plants. Plant them straight into the ground or into some nice pots on your balcony.

With a fresh and tidy home, inside and out, you're all set to enjoy the spring season. Whether you've just moved in or have been settled for a while, a proper spring clean brings new and positive energy into your space! Happy cleaning!
